Initially, as a sideline during the long winter months, woodcarving gradually grew in Val Gardena as an important employment and income opportunity for the inhabitants of the valley. With a lot of hard work wood carving developed already at the beginning of the 17th century as fine handicraft. During the first 3 centuries wood carving was limited to the sacred art until the demand of profane and decorative art grew. In 1872 and 1907 in Ortisei and Selva two art schools were opened to guarantee the following generations a professional training.
Nowadays handmade wood carving in Val Gardena is protected by an attached trademark guaranteed by the Chamber of Commerce Bolzano.
