Man with Shield / Kite has a remarkable history – from the Venice Biennale to the installation on the Alpe di Rasciesa, to being exhibited at the Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl. The sculpture was renamed “Spirit of the Dolomites” during the exhibition for the European celebrations marking the end of the Great War in Schio. It is a solid, grave figure with its chest slashed open, revealing affliction but also an opportunity to penetrate into the depths of the human being; an instrument of defence that the artist rethinks in terms of lightness and refraction of the most genuine self – a face is indeed reflected on the surface; a symbol of the torment of history, which evokes at the same time the sphere of civic engagement, the vulnerability of the individual and also the dimension of play.
