Sculpture
Marko Kostner
Marko Kostner's current work focuses primarily on the human figure, humanity in its broadest sense, and the attempt to adequately represent and visualize the questions that arise from the convergence of these diverse approaches.
He does not shy away from delving into the complexity of the subject matter, exploring and illuminating both the psychological, social, and anthropological aspects inherent in the entire issue.
Kostner, who prefers to use natural materials such as wood, clay, and bronze to lend his work a certain groundedness, does not seek the grandeur of monumental sculpture in his works, but rather is interested in a more subtle form of expression. He is fascinated, for example, by recognizing and capturing so-called "fleeting moments"—moments of the self-evident in which, precisely because of their triviality and simplicity, the human element is most clearly revealed. An unguarded movement, a tentative turn, a tried-and-tested gesture – everyday situations that unfold unobtrusively and naturally before our eyes, yet are precisely what give a person their individuality, their character, and what fascinates and challenges the artist.
His sculptures are not heroic ideals from another dimension, but rather depictions of people who, precisely through their weakness and vulnerability, convey a sense of closeness and connection. Uncertainty and fallibility are no longer taboo. The viewer sees not role models to be emulated, but a counterpart, a "you," a kindred spirit, with whom one can feel connected, with whom one can ideally identify.
The sculptor employs traditional techniques and methods, which he combines with reflections born of timeless research that deliberately lead away from familiar thought patterns and preconceived opinions.
One approach is the occasional combination of different materials to create contrasts and synergies, to enhance the respective expression, and to elevate the sometimes strict methodology of his technique to a playful level.
